Ukrainian steel imports in 11 months shrink by 61% YoY

According to the data released by metal trading enterprise Ukrainian Mining and Metallurgical Company, during January to November 2009 Ukraine imports of steel products registered a decline of 61.1% YoY to about 649,000 tons.

Compared with July this year when the country steel product imports reached a peak monthly volume for the year so far, the import of steel products in November fell by 36.8% to 57,300 tons down by 9.1% MoM. However, due to the beginning of the crisis in October 2008 and also due to the sharp decrease of steel product imports in November 2008, steel imports in November this year increased by 13.1% YoY.
Accordingly, in January to November this year, the biggest decreases YoY in imports in the Ukrainian steel market were registered by shaped sections, imports of channels dropped by 85.9% YoY, imports of angles fell by 84% YoY while imports of beams went down by 71.2% YoY. The next biggest decreases in imports were recorded by flat steel products, HRC imports dropped by 84.8% YoY, CRC imports fell by 60.6% YoY and galvanized steel imports went down by 45.2%.

Ukraine steel consumption in 10 months down by 38% YoY

According to the data issued by metal trading enterprise Ukrainian Mining and Metallurgical Company, in January to October this year Ukraine consumed about 4.72 million tons of rolled steel products down by 37.8% YoY.
In January to October 2009 Ukraine consumption of primary rolled steel products, excluding pipes was as follows:

During the period in question, the share of imports in the domestic rolled steel product market decreased to 11.9% YoY from 20.4% YoY amounting to 591,000 tons. (SteelOrbis)

Ukrainian steel market in 8 months shrinks by 43 pct YoY

According to the data issued by metal trading enterprise Ukrainian Mining and Metallurgical Company, in January to August 2009 Ukraine steel market capacity registered a 42.9%YoY to about 3.643 million tonnes.

In August this year steel product deliveries in the Ukrainian domestic market amounted to 600,000 tonnes. Ukrainian Mining and Metallurgical Company said "Since October 2008 this is the maximum index of the monthly volumes of the steel product deliveries to the domestic market. Compared to August 2008, the volume of deliveries decreases by just 6.1%."

Just as in the corresponding period of the previous year, in January to August this year the biggest share in Ukrainian domestic rolled steel product consumption was held by hot rolled coil more than a third of the total volume, followed by rebar and wire rod with nine percent and 8.5% respectively.

In January to August 2009, Ukraine main consumer of steel remained the pipe sector, which increased its share of overall consumption in the domestic steel market from 23.8% to 28% while the local metal trade sector, which occupied first place in 2008, saw its share decrease from 35.1% to 25.1%. UGMK steel product import to Ukraine in 7 months decrease

According to Mr Ruslan Mazhinsky marketing director of UGMK, quantity of steel products imported to Ukraine during 7 months of 2009 decreased by 65% in comparison with the same period of 2008 and made 383,600 tonnes.
It is noticed in the report that the most significant decrease was noticed for flat rolled products for hot rolled down by 88.8%, for cold rolled down by 71% as well as for long products angle down by 83.4%, channel down by 82.7%, beam down by 71.8%. Decrease for steel bar products was not so dramatic rebar and wire down by 23% round bar down by 26.5%.
Mr Ruslan Mazhinsky said the reasons for steel imports decrease merely in 3 times is deprivation of financial and economic situation in the country as well as instability of local currency.
UGMK said in 2009 the main importer is tube industry which expanded its share from 27.3% to 40.5% while steel trading companies narrowed from 34.4% to 24.1%. (SteelGuru)
